A wonderful piece of traditional Rwandan wall art, this Imigongo will make a brilliant addition to any interior.
Back in the 18 century, Imigongo were originally created and developed by Kakira, the son of King Kimenyi of Gisaka in the eastern Kibungo region of Rwanda, near the Tanzanian border. We source all our Imigongo from the same region today, where they are individually hand-crafted using techniques handed down from generation to generation.
The prince who first created Imigongo used them to decorate the interior of his house and the dull wall of his hut. He then taught local women his method and they passed it on through the generations.
The designs involve geometric and spiral shapes forming an eye-catching pattern. Pigments range from white and black, to red earth, to ochre. Imigongo are a truly indigenous Rwandan art form.
