A wonderful piece of traditional Rwandan wall art, this Imigongo will make a brilliant addition to any interior.
Back in the 18 century, Imigongo were originally created and developed by Kakira, the son of King Kimenyi of Gisaka in the eastern Kibungo region of Rwanda, near the Tanzanian border. We source all our Imigongo from the same region today, where they are individually hand-crafted using techniques handed down from generation to generation.
The prince who first created Imigongo used them to decorate the interior of his house and the dull wall of his hut. He then taught local women his method and they passed it on through the generations.
Design: the Ubumuntu heart - a single heart formed by two people embracing, connected to the World. Inspired by Rwanda’s geometric design tradition, it reflects the concept of ‘Ubumuntu’: our shared humanity, actively expressed through empathy and care for other people.
DIAMETER: 350mm
Buying this product, you also help save lives. Every purchase supports the Aegis Trust and the Kigali Genocide Memorial, established by Aegis in Rwanda.
Through education, Aegis enables divided communities to move from fear and violence to shared responsibility for peace. It persuades people to lay down their weapons and champion humanity instead of taking revenge. And it puts the voices of survivors at the heart of its work, supporting them to rebuild their lives.
